Employment Opportunity: Community Peace Officer Town of Cardston

The Town of Cardston invites applications for the position of Community Peace Officer (CPO). This is a key role responsible for the education-based application and enforcement of provincial and municipal legislation within the community.

Position Summary:

Reporting to the Chief Administrative Officer, the Community Peace Officer will be responsible for the enforcement of bylaws, traffic regulations, and applicable provincial statutes. The position requires regular patrols of Main Street, oversight of animal control and security operations, and proactive engagement with community stakeholders, including local schools, the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP), and local businesses.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Enforce municipal bylaws and provincial legislation in a fair and consistent manner.
  • Patrol Main Street to maintain public order, provide a visible presence, and support local businesses.
  • Collaborate with the RCMP, schools, and community organizations to promote safety and awareness.
  • Conduct investigations, manage evidence, and prepare for court proceedings as required.
  • Supervise departmental staff and contractors, ensuring compliance with policies and safety standards.
  • Oversee departmental budgets and participate in capital project planning.
  • Respond to public inquiries with professionalism and integrity.

Qualifications and Requirements:

  • Current Community Peace Officer Level I appointment (or ability to obtain).
  • Strong working knowledge of relevant legislation, municipal bylaws, and enforcement procedures.
  • Demonstrated leadership, initiative, and sound judgement.
  • Excellent communication and conflict resolution skills.
  • Flexibility to work evenings and weekends as required, including pound management duties.
  • Valid Class 5 driver’s licence and satisfactory driver’s abstract.
  • A clear criminal record check and vulnerable sector check.

Position Details:

  • Full-time, permanent position (2,080 hours per annum)
  • Salary commensurate with qualifications and experience, in accordance with the Town’s salary grid.
