Curbside garbage pickup is available to all residents and businesses in the Town of Cardston. All Rules and regulations are detailed in the Town of Cardston Garbage Bylaw (Bylaw #1693) Residents and businesses may also take domestic garbage to the Transfer Station 1km East of Town. Recycling services in Cardston are contracted to the Cardston Support Services Association who manage the Town-owned recycling centre on 2nd Ave E, and facilitate the collection and sorting of all recyclable materials listed below.

Includes tin or aluminum cans like soup cans or lids from glass jars and bottles. Must be clean, labels removed, and uncrushed.

Includes flattened cardboard and boxboard like cereal boxes, kleenex boxes, or cardboard cylinders. Remove all plastics. Must be clean and dry. Flattened cardboard may be deposited in any of the green cardboard recycling bins around town, or in the trailer at the recycling centre.
♻ Recycled into new cardboard products
Electronic waste includes computers, servers, laptops, tablets, printers, speakers, monitors, keyboards, mice, cables, and televisions.
♻ Recycled into new glass, metal and plastics
All clear glass except lightbulbs, windows, or coloured glass. Remove all lids. Must be clean.
♻ Recycled into new glass products
Newspapers and magazines includes glossy inserts, coupons, and small thick. Remove all plastics. Must be clean and dry.
♻ Recycled into new paper
Mixed office paper includes printed white and coloured papers, file folders, and envelopes without windows. Remove all plastics.

There is a special bin located in a lean-to shed up at the the recycling building. Place all paint cans neatly into he bin. Please ensure that all lids are tightly sealed.

Wrapping paper, carbon paper, tissues, paper towels, glued or wire bound books, phone books, waxed cardboard, juice or milk cartons, styrofoam, plastic bags, laminated papers, aluminum foil, aerosol cans, oil containers & varsol cans.
Toxic waste can not be taken to any recycling stations, the transfer station, or the landfill. Toxic waste includes things like oil, antifreeze, materials containing mercury, etc.
These can be taken to the Waste & Recycling Centre at the Lethbridge Regional Landfill for proper disposal. For details on what is accepted at the Centre, you can visit www.lethbridge.ca or call 403-329-7367.
There are concrete bays at the transfer station for wood and grass (organic waste). The bays are rotated regularly as materials are burned. Obey the signs and do not move the barricades. All organic waste must be placed inside the concrete bays.
The transfer station burn site is for waste generates by ratepayers only. Contractors must take their waste wood directly to the landfill and pay a disposal fee.
Only wastes defined as burnable debris in the Clean Air Regulations will be allowed at the burning site, i.e. trees, branches, garden waste, straw, grass, wooden construction material, etc.
Wood must not be treated. Treated wood may be delivered directly to the Landfill Site. There will be a disposal fee.
No grass clippings are allowed in the building at the transfer station. All grass clippings must be dumped loose at the burning site, absolutely no bags of any type are permitted, this includes paper, decomposable, or compostable bags.
ACCEPTED:
All wood materials must be 100% wood. No paper, plastic, cloth, metal, drywall or other non-wood construction martials are permitted in the burn site.
PROHIBITED:
The Town utilizes the services of an independent contractor for residential and commercial garbage collection. Garbage is collected once a week for residential customers and as needed for commercial customers. To view the pick up schedule and map, click on the curbside pickup schedule link in the sidebar.
All garbage from town is taken to the Cardston Transfer Station. The Transfer Station is a convenient place for all local residents to bring their non-construction waste that can't be picked up by the contractor, as well as grass clippings, non-treated wood for the burn pile, tires, and appliances. The waste collected at the Transfer Station is transported out to the Chief Mountain Regional Solid Waste Authority's landfill.
Residents are allowed to leave a maximum of four (4) bags at the curb weighing no more than 40lbs each. Extra garbage must be tagged with an over-limit sticker than can be purchased at the Town office for $2.00 each.
All garbage must be placed in a proper bag that is approximately 60 to 121 litres in capacity and securely tied. Residents may choose to place their garbage bags in a garbage can if it meets the specifications of an approved garbage receptacle in the Garbage Bylaw. The Town does not provide garbage cans.
For curbside residential garbage pickup all garbage must be placed at the curb by 8:00AM on your respective pickup day. There is no other time specified in the Garbage bylaw as to when garbage will be collected. Our contracted garbage collector may routinely pickup the garbage in your neighbourhood at a relatively consistent time of day, but there are factors such as weather, mechanical breakdowns, garbage volume, or change in driver that may affect the time of day your garbage is collected.
Garbage cans are not required for residential garbage collection, but are recommended if you intend to store your garbage outside or put it out to the curb the night before your pickup day. All residential garbage is hand lifted by the collector, so there are size and weight restrictions for garbage cans. The owner of a residence is responsible for ensuring that if they choose to use garbage cans they must meet the following specifications:
Garbage cans or receptacles that are larger or heavier than what is allowed may not be picked up, and it will be the responsibility of the homeowner to take their own garbage to the transfer station.
When certain holidays are observed on regular garbage pickup days, there will be no curbside pickup for that day, and the pickup schedule will be delayed by one day for the rest of that week. Please reference the schedule for all observed holidays.
Please note that not all civic holidays are observed as a garbage holiday. For example: Boxing Day and Easter Monday are never observed a garbage holidays, and our contractor always collects garbage on those days.
